I mentor a lot of people at the start of their careers, and they arrive terrified they are learning the wrong thing. So let me be direct about what has never stopped mattering.
The things that do not go obsolete
- Observation. If you can see why a shot feels wrong, you can fix it in any tool that exists or ever will.
- Timing and weight. No model has taste about the pause before a punch. You can.
- Finishing. The ability to take something to done, past the fun 80%, is rarer and more valuable than ever.
Learn the tools of the year, but bank your career on the skills of the century.
The technology will keep moving. Aim your learning at the parts of you it cannot move, and you will be fine. Better than fine.
